NOTES from DEF KLF/MV: ----------------

Just to remember a few important facts.

Not a single Afro-american artist had
been shown on MTV until M. Jackson's
success.
For example the french band Rita-
Mitsouko had its video banned on MTV in
1987 , because " there were too much
black musicians (!)".

And nowadays many videos are still
banned or censored on MTV.

Public Enemy's videos are full of BEEP;
and some videos like Madonna's videos
are prohibed, many people think it is
American censorship,or government that
prevent MTV from showing them, but it's
not because other channels show them in
the US.

JORDY

He is 4 years old, his name is Jordy

The song is called: "C'est dur d'etre
un bébé !". It means "It's hard to be
a baby". That is dance music, a Tekkno
mix has also been done. A version in
English is planned and also a cartoon
about him. So you might be able to
listen to that stupid song pretty soon
in the rest of Europe.

They are recording a new album, it will
be out at the beginning of Spring 93.

NEVERMIND + the single 'Dive'

Smells Like Teen Spirit
=======================

Load up on guns
Bring your friends
It's fun to lose
And to pretend
She's overboard
Myself assured
I know I know
A dirty word

hello (x 16)

With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido
Yea

I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

hello (x 16)

With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido
Yea

And I forget
Just what it takes
And yet I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard
Its hard to find
Oh well, whatever, nevermind

hello (x 16)

With the lights out it's less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido

Sell the kids for food
Weather changes moods
Spring is here again
Pray for darker grounds

He's the one
He likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he don't know what it means
Don't know what it means
And I say
He's the one
He likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he don't know what it means
Don't know what it means
And I say yea

We can have some more
Nature is a whore
Who's is on a prude (?)
Tender age in bloom

He's the one
He likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he don't know what it means

I'm so happy
Cause today I found my friends
They're in my head

Cause everyday for all I care
And I'm not scared
Light my candles
In a daze cause I found god

Yeaa (X bunch of times)

I'm so lonely
That's ok, I shaved my head
And I'm not sad
And just maybe
I'm to blame for all I've heard
And I'm not sure
I'm so excited
I can't wait to meet you there
And I dont' care
I'm so horny
That's ok, my will is good

Yeaa (x bunch of times)

Polly want a cracker
Think i should've offered first
Think she wants some water
Do put out the blowtorch

Is it me
Have a seat
Let me clip
Her dirty wings
Let me take a ride
Cut yourself
Was a mouth
Please myself
Got some rope
Have been told
Promise you
Have been true
Let me take a ride
Cut yourself
Was a mouth
Please myself

Polly wants a cracker
Maybe she will like some food
She asked me to untie her
Chase her not nice for few

Is it me
Have a seat
Let me clip
Her dirty wings
Let me take a ride
Cut yourself
Was a mouth
Please myself
Got some rope
Have been told
Promise you

Polly said her back hurts
She's just as bored as me
She caught me off my guard
Amazes me with her instinct

Let me take a ride
Cut yourself
Was a mouth
Please myself
Got some rope
Have been told
Promise you
Have been true
Let me take a ride
Cut yourself

Truth, Come a little security
I can't let you smile for me
Liked you but I go to work
Turn it up, take a turn
Don't regret a thing

I got this friend, you see
Makes me feel
I want him more
And I could steal
I'll arrest myself
And wear a shirt
I'll go outta my way
To prove I still
Still love you

Don't, tell me what I wanna hear
Fraid I've never known a fear
Experience anything I need
I'll keep fighting jealousy
Tell this fucking god

I got this friend, you see
Makes me feel
I want him more
And I could steal
I'll arrest myself
And wear a shirt
I'll go outta my way
To prove I still
Still love you
I got this friend, you see

On A Plain
==========

Slap yourself
Without any words
I've got so high
I scratched till I bleed

Love myself
Better than you
Know it's wrong
So what should I do

Finest Day
That I ever had
Cause when I learn
Cry on the band

Love myself
Better than you
Know it's wrong
So what should I do

I'm on a plain
I can't complain
I'm on a plain

My mother died
Every night
They said you see
And quote me I'm mad

Love myself
Better than you
Know it's wrong
So what should I do

Black she got
Black nails again
You got to put
She's offers a goat

Love myself
Better than you
Know it's wrong
So what should I do

I'm on a plain
I can't complain
I'm on a plain

Somewhere out in love
There's a fourth
In a dream
There's memories stored

What the hell
Am I trying to say

Use that time
To make it all clear
To write off lies
That don't make a sense

Love myself
Better than you
Know it's wrong
So what should I do

One more special
Message to go
Then I'm done
And I can go home

Love myself
Better than you
Know it's wrong
So what should I do

I'm on a plain I
I can't complain I 4 TIMES

presents the lyrics of Can't Truss it
and Shut em Down by PUBLIC ENEMY of
their Album Apocalypse 91 -
The Enemy strikes black.

CAN'T TRUSS IT ------------------------

Bass in your face
Not an eight track
Gettin' it good to the wood
So the people
Give you some a dat
Reactin' to the fax
That I kick and it stick
And I stay around
Pointin' to the joint,
put the Buddha down
Goin' goin' gettin to the roots
Ain't given it up
So turn me loose
But then again I got a story
That's harder than the hardcore
Cost of the holocaust
I'm talin' 'bout the one still goin' on
I know
Where I'm from not dum diddie dum
From the base motherland
The place of the drum
Invaded by the wack diddie wack
Fooled the black, left us faded
King and chief probably had a big beef
Because of dat now I gnt my teeth
So here's a song to the strong
'Bout a shake of a snake
And the smile went along wit dat
Can't truss it
Kickin' wicked rhymes
Like a fortune teller
'Cause the wickedness done by Jack
Where everybody at
Divided and sold
For liquor and the gold
Smacked in the back
For the other man to mack
Now the story that I'm kickin' is gory
Little Rock where they be
Dockin' this boat
No hope I'm shackled
Plus gang tackled
By the other hand swingin' the rope
Wearin' red,
white and blue Jack and his crew
The guy's authorized
beat down for the brown
Man to man, each one so it teach one
Born to terrorize sisters
and every brother
One love who said it
I know Whodini sang it
But the hater taught hate
That's why we gang bang it
Beware of the hand
When it's comin' from the left
I ain't trippin' just watch ya step
Can't truss it
An I judge everyone, one by the one
Look here come the judge
Watch it here he come now
I can only guess what's happ'nin'
Years ago he woulda been
The ships captain
Gettin' me bruised on a cruise
What I got to lose, lost all contact
Got me layin' on my back
Rollin' in my own leftover
When I roll over,
I roll over in somebody else's
90 Fuckin' days on a slave ship
Count 'em fallin' off
2, 3, 4 hun'ed at a time
Blood in the wood and it's mine
I'm chokin' on spit feelin' pain
Like my brain bein' chained
Still gotta give it what I got
But it's hot in the day,
cold in the night
But I thrive to survive.
I pray to God to stay alive
Attitude boils up inside
And that ain't it (I'll every quit)
Still I pray to get my hands 'round
The neck of the man wit' the whip
3 months pass,
they brand a label on my ass
To signify
Owned
I'm on the microphone
Sayin' 1555
How I'm livin'
We been livin' here
Livin' ain't the word
I been givin'
Haven't got
Classify us in the have-nots
Fightin' haves
'Cause it's all about money
When it comes Armageddon
Mean I'm gettin' mine
Here I am turn it over Sam
427 to the year
Do you understand
That's why it's hard
For the black to love the land
Once again
Bass in your face

SHUT EM DOWN --------------------------

I testified
My mama cried
Black people died
When the other man lied
See the TV, listen to me double trouble
I overhaul and I'm comin'
From the lower level
I'm takin' tabs
Sho nuff stuff to grab
like shirts it hurts
Wit a neck to wreck
Took a poll 'cause our soul
Took a toll
From the education
Of a TV station
But look around
Hear go the sound of the wreckin' ball
Boom an Pound
When I
Shut 'em down
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
What I use in the battle for the mind
I hit it hard
Like it supposed
Pullin' no blows to the nose
Like uncle L said I'm rippin' up shows
Then what it is
only 5 percent of the biz
I'm addin' woes
That's how da why it goes
Then U think I rank never drank,
point blank
I own loans
Suckers got me runnin' from the bank
Civil liberty I can't se to pay a lee
I never saw a way to pay a sap
To read the law
Then come a victim of a lawyer
Don't know ya, never saw ya
Tape cued
Gettin' me sued
Playin' games wit' my head
What the judge said put me in the red
Got me thinkin'
'bout a trigger to the lead
No no
My educated mind say
Suckers gonna pay
Anyway
There gonna be a day
'Cause the troop they roll in
To posse up
Whole from the ground
Ready to go
Throw another round
Sick of the ride
It's suicide
For the other side of the town
When I find a way to shut 'em down
Who count the money
In da neighborhood
But we spendin' money
To no end lookin' for a friend
In a war to the core
Rippin' up the poor in da stores
Till they get a brother
Kickin' down doors
Then I figure I kick it bigger
Look 'em dead in the eye
And they wince
Defense is pressurized
They don't want it to be
Another racial attack
In disguise so give some money back
I like NIKE but wait a minute
The neighborhood supports so put some
Money in it
Corporations owe
Dey gotta give up the dough
To da town
Or else
We gotta shut'em down

RAP REVIEWS

ALPINA OF TPN

---------------------------------------

YO! Brothers and Sisters (hope there
will be some female readers).
Alpina of TPN strikes back with another
article for the best underground
hardcore Discmag on ST (or perhaps on
Falcon).

In this article you will find all news
about the Rap-scene. I present you the
latest CD's or records, as you please.
If I'm motivated, more issues will
released & the earth did not explode I
will write also articles about the
latest Rap-stuff in future issues.

Here are the ratings:

*** (three stars): Megacool flavor !!!!
Run to the next shop
and buy it (faast!).

** (two stars): Cool stuff!!
If you have much money
at the moment buy it.
If not copy it on a MC
from a friend. If no
friend has the CD,
contact me (address in
the adverts) and I can
copy it for ya.

* (one star): Only nice and nothing
special.Better listen
to it before copying!

(no star): Shit ! No flavor, shit
lyrics, shit ryhmes.
Everything is shit!!

So no more bullshit better let's start:

BEASTIE BOYS: CHECK YOUR HEAD

The three guys from Brooklyn/N.Y. are
back with a new album. In my opinon it's
really a musical-masterpiece. The first
tune is called Jimmy James & it's cool
as ice. It was in the Top 20 in the
States. Then there's Pass the Mic also
a very good tune witch was also on the
charts and So watcha want. This three
tunes are also released on Video.
Especially the So watcha want Video is
very good.
The other tunes are also very good. It's
really hard stuff, often with heavy
guitars and the bassline is high as
always.The most lyrics aren't bullshit.
In most tunes they are talking about
serious problems. Very good comeback by
the Beastie Boys. Hope there will be
more cool stuff in the future.

RATING: ***

EPMD: BUSINESS NEVER PERSONAL

Yeah! It's the fourth Album by the two
strictly hardcore Rapper from NY. After
Strictly Business, Unfinished Business
and Golddigger it's also a CD with very
well produced tracks. The best is a tune
called Crossover witch is also released
on Video. They talk about Rap and that
many have changed up their style from
"jeans to suits" that means that more
and more Rapper are using bad lyrics &
ryhmes and they are going more and more
to the Pop-music witch is of course
shit! On the album there are also Guest
apperiences by Das EFX and K-Solo. They
are now on Tour together with Das EFX,
K-Solo and Redman. Let's hope that they
also come to Europe. This is hardcore
funk , hardcore sound, this only can
mean:

RATING: ***
DEFKLF RATING: ***

DAS EFX: DEAD SERIOUS

Whow!! What a boom! Two newcomer from
N.Y. with their first Album They have
a really new style. It's a kind of hard
stuff with a little bit Reagge (it's
hard to explain) There are tunes like
Mic Checka (cool Video!), They want
EFX and many more very cool tunes.
I think there's nothing to wonder that
this Album is great, because it's
produced by EPMD!! I think DAS (this is
a German Article, but I have no idea why
they have used it for their name) EFX
have a great future because they done
a small revolution with their new
style!
Of course:

RATING: ***

ERIC B + RAKIM:
DON'T SWEAT THE TECHNIQUE

New Album featuring a mixure of really
good stuff.Don't Sweat the technique is
a tune witch sound very good. They used
once again a saxo in the background
and I think the Video is also nice esp.
the girls with not much closes on. Some
of the tunes are in my opinion a little
bit soft, but that doesn't matter. The
Album is only produced by one man:
Eric B. He's responsible for all sound,
scratchwork and he has written all
lyrics. The vocals are by Rakim.

RATING: ** (because of the soft tunes)

ICE CUBE: DEATH CETIFICATE

The nigger you love to hate is back with
a new album witch contains many good
hard hardcore stuff. He is also against
sucker mc's like Vanilla Ice or Hammer.
In his Video "Be true to the Game" he
kidnaps many suckers. Ice Cube is a
fascinating man. 'Cause he's a real man
from the Ghetto. And also after he sold
many Cd's, Tapes and records he still
lives in South Central/L.A. (This is
where the big troubles had happen this
year after the 3 cops, who fucked my man
Roodney King are called free). With the
money he earned he has not bought a big
car or house but he's spending his
money for projects in his neighbor-
hood. So, another reason to buy his
brill work!

RATING: ***

BOBBY BROWN: BOBBY

Wot? Bobby Brown? Who's that?I think he
is only a new newjack. After lamebrain
Hammer another has changed his style
from "jeans to suits". I think this
Album has nothing in common with
harcore stuff. It's only another "Pop
tip". This Album is only produced to
get one or two tunes very high in the
charts. It's a simple Pop Album with
one or two " good " sounds and
the rest is 5 minutes stuff.
Don't think that I have bought this
shit Cd only a friend of mine and he
has already scratched it. So it's:

RATING: (ZERO)

PUBLIC ENEMY: GREATEST MISSES

Yeah!! The masters did it again! This
new Album consits of new, not yet
released tunes & remixed old stuff and
a live version of Shut'em down. It's as
always megacool!! The new tunes are:
Tie goes to the Runner,Get off my back,
Hazy Shade of Criminal (very good), Air
Hoodlum and some more. The remixed tunes
are taken from all the old Albums but
now they sound much fresher. I think it
is a nice thing for all PE addicted
people (like me of course!) who are
waiting for a new Album witch is
commin'in 93.

RATING:********************************

ICE CUBE: THE PREDATOR

Yeah, I bought this fucking cool CD
yesterday. There's the tune called
"Wicked" and it's very good.
Ice Cube is once again attacking the
gouverment and cops very hard:
"ICE CUBE TO ACKNOWLEDGE AMERICA'S
COPS FOR THEIR SYTEMATIC AND BRUTAL
KILLINGS OF BROTHERS ALL OVER THE
COUNTRY (MOST OF THE STORIES NEVER MADE
IT TO THE CAMERA). THESE ACTIONS
COMMITTED BY THE POLICE HAVE PROVIDED
ME WITH SOME OF THE MATERIAL FOR THIS
ALBUM. TO SUM ALL UP,THANKS FOR NOTHIN'
WHITE AMERICA NEEDS TO THANK ALL BLACK
PEOPLE FOR STILL TALKIN' TO THEM 'CAUSE
YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE STOP !!!!
Ice Cube speaks as an African not as an
American or African American ! This
Album is simply great:

RATING:********************************

Note from DK/AMAZINE: He speaks as an
African...but he's american....I don't
C what he's so great... I'm tired with
band like Arrested Development which
say stupid things like :" I see Africa
as a promised land, where one day all
African people across the world could
come back". Their vision of Africa is
idealistic, Africa is not a peaceful
place... Well i don't feel like today
talking a lot about this, but I just
tell every black people to be careful
when they talk about Africa, if they
don't want people answering them:
GO BACK AFRICA !

NENEH CHERRY
"Homebrew"

Circa records / Virgin

"Homebrew" is the 2nd album from the
most famous swedish musician : Neneh
Cherry.A very important point to notice
about this album is that it has been
engineered by Cameron Mc Vey who lives
with Neneh and who had also produced
and mixed all tracks from Massive
Attack's album : "Blue Lines". So a few
songs sound like it. Some shuffle beat
boxes, some peaceful scratches...
It a bit less pop than her 1st album,
even if the single " For the love of
money " is funky or if the song with
Michael Stipe of Rem winks at Rock.
One of the subject songs deal with
is Sex. But it is much more inteligent
and relevant than "Salt and Pepper" or
Madonna.
The tone is funnier,cooler... ( tongue-
in-cheek ). She says things like sex is
beautiful, children need to learn sex
in school, relations between male and
female might be tenderness, affection
shared and not a try of domination. But
it is never moralist or militant.
And finally to be complete I must say
that there's a song featuring Guru from
Gangstarr.
It's a very good record that can be
listened to by Hip-Hop-freaks but also
by people who like authentic things.
There's no compromise, ulterior motives
or anything like that,Neneh Cherry did
what she wanted to do and we thank her.

PUBLIC ENEMY
"Greatest misses"

Def Jam / Sony

With the coming of bands like Arrested
Development & D.C. Basehead in the Rap
world , it seems to be time for
negociations. Even if rap identity is
urban and destroy after L.A.'s riots,
hard-boiled rappers talk about peace,
and Bloods and Crips in L.A are said to
walk together now.
So we expected from Public Enemy a
change. And if Greatest misses is not
a radical change, it is nevetheless
a deceleration...
"Tie goes the runner" and "Hazy shade
of criminal" sound like the previous
2 albums, but the 4 other new titles
are cooler than what they were doing.
"Get off my back" can easily be sung
under your shower...
The 6 other tracks are old songs
remixed. It might be for people who
didn't know PE 1st albums, but except
"Louder than a bomb" which is magnify,
the new versions of the 5 other songs
don't bring anything new to the titles.
What can we expect from PE next album
something "politicaly correct" ? or a
new apocalypse ?
Who knows... and who really know what
would be better ?

MARKY MARK and the Funky Bunch
"You gotta believe"

Interscope records / Warner music

I went to my usual shop record to buy
the James & Walter's album, but it
wasn't in the boxes. So I checked the
new rap records, Stereo Mc's wasn't
there but many from Marky Mark...
I've finally bought it, even if I
didn't know anything about this record.
My very 1st impression was not very
good a bit too funk and pop from my
point.
Back at home, I look at the sleeve, and
I read the greetings....amazement...
New Kids On The Block are in !!!! and
Addidas is greeted as sneaker supplier,
and Roots for supplying their clothes.

A few days later Gangster/MV phoned me
I told him about my purchase and he
told me the uncensored truth...
Marky Mark is the brother of a guy from
New Kids.
Marky's voice sucks,lyrics are insipid
I'm very ashamed of having bought such
a shit.
If anybody like M.M., I'm okay to sell
him my original tape or to swap it for
anything else even a blank tape. It is
not a joke. Write to my PO BOX.

---------------------------------------

THE FRANK and WALTERS
"Trains,boats and planes"

Go! Disc/Barclay

If you expect from a record to give
you preconceived ideas, solutions about
world problems, this record is not for
you.
This record deals with values like
friendship,fraternity,right to love and
to be loved.
Frank and Walters world is not ours,
They live far away from our world of
fashion and of ambition.
Their music is joyful, a bit like the
"Shinny Happy people" of REM. Their
authenticity and their simplicity give
some entertaining melodies.
Simple things are the most difficult
things to talk about. The F&W find the
right words talk to about them, and I am
not able to talk about their words;just
listen to their music and you will
be impressed by it , as kids are
impressed watching trains, boats and
planes.

Def Klf/MV

---------------------------------------

NIRVANA
"Incesticide"

Geffen/BMG

This is not their new album, but a
compilation. Is Nirvana going to be
a commercial band ?
But it is more than a classic 'Greatest
hits' record. The only
song which is on their previous album
( Never Mind ) is Polly and the new
version is a very quick one. It can't
be compared with the original one.
The 13 other songs are old unknow
songs. In fact it is B sides
of singles, Bonus tracks... From my
point of view if you enjoyed Never Mind
you might buy "Bleach" their first real
album,it is better. But if you're a
fan of Nirvana, ( you already got
"Bleach" ), so buy "Incesticide" you
won't be disapointed by titles like
"DIVE" or "Molly's lips".
